Layers of sound

The music is today emerging from layers - lines with slow moving chromatics, third based of course, floating over more regular and differently paced quasi-diatonic triadic harmony; the mix of different tonalities is important here and hard to get right but even more important is the sense that other lines (e.g. a tune of Orlando Gibbons, a piece of chant etc) are able to come to the fore and then retreat again.
